Who Was Saint David?

The exact details of his life remain somewhat unclear, as much of what we know comes from legend and hagiography (writings about saints), but he is often portrayed as a figure of immense spiritual significance.

According to the Life of Saint David, a text written by Rhygyfarch in the 11th century, David was the son of Sant, a prince, and Non, a nun. He was said to have been educated under the guidance of Saint Illtud, another prominent figure in Welsh monasticism. David became known for his piety and asceticism, living a simple, devout life dedicated to spreading Christianity. He founded monastic communities throughout Wales, the most famous being at Glyn Rhosyn (now known as St Davids), which became a major pilgrimage site in the medieval period.

Saint David was reputed for his wisdom and holiness, performing miracles and offering guidance to kings and laypeople alike. One of the most famous miracles attributed to him is the story of his speaking to a large crowd at a gathering in the presence of King Arthur, where he miraculously made the ground beneath him rise to form a hill, so that everyone could see and hear him.
